The Sarah Mynhier Book Drive

Sarah Mynhier is an alum of LFHS who has made literacy her passion.  For the past two years she has led a program to collect and distribute books for children in neighboring communities - distributing more than 4,000 books to Oak Terrace School in Highwood, North School in North Chicago, Women's Residential, A Safe Place and the Big Brothers and Big Sisters organization.  This year the Volunteer Center has taken over the management of the book drive to continue to promote literacy.

Books are being collected in cooperation with School District 67 during the week of October 29th through November 9th at the local schools.  Books can also be dropped off anytime at the Volunteer Center, where we will continue the program year-round.

Please consider donating new or gently used children's books and thank you for sharing your love of reading with children in need.  Contact the Volunteer Center for more information at (847) 234-8876.

Are you looking for an alternative to Saturday morning cartoons? Tune out that TV, and do some good!

The Volunteer Center is delighted to announce our 2008 Winter/Spring Little Hands, Big Hearts program full of volunteering opportunities for children ages K-5.  Thanks to growing participation in the program, we now have volunteer opportunities at three different sites:  The Garden at Elawa Farm, Westmoreland Nursing Home, and Lake Forest Open Lands.  Activities will take place at Westmoreland Nursing Home between September and May and will begin at LF Open Lands in the Fall.  A comprehensive LHBH schedule will be published in August 2007.  All events are held on Saturday morning from 10 to 11 am.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Westmoreland Nursing Home

Regarded as a "highlight of the month", the residents of Westmoreland Nursing Home have welcomed our young volunteers for the past five years.  Whether it's receiving a sweet smile, sharing an interesting conversation, or playing a game of Connect 4, our "grandfriends" always look forward to seeing the kids from LHBH.

All events are from 10:00 to 11:00am in the Activities Room on the first floor of Westmoreland Nursing Home.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.  All supplies and a light snack will be provided.
