Do you have an exceptional volunteer who deserves recognition, but don't have the resources or venue in place for hosting a special celebration?
For the past three years, The Volunteer Center of LF/LB has provided this venue— hosting "Women of Service & Style"—a beautiful awards luncheon for women in the community who made volunteering a part of their everyday lifestyle. Now, as Lake County Cares, the event will be known as the "The I Care Awards"-- an elegant dinner honoring men, women and youth on April 24, 2010 at the Exmoor Club in Highland Park, Illinois. The same intimate format will allow agencies and individuals to recognize the extraordinary volunteers who have impacted their work and lives in a very personal, and uplifting setting. Now accepting nominations for the I Care Awards. Nominations must be submitted or postmarked no later than February 5, 2010.

All events are from 10:00 to 11:00am in the Activities Room on the first floor of Westmoreland Nursing Home.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.  All supplies and a light snack will be provided.

Lake Forest Open Lands

Volunteers will spend the first 5 minutes receiving a short introduction about the type of work they'll be doing that day and why it is important.  The day will end with a 5 minute recap of what they accomplished.  A short story may sometimes be included.  Volunteers may occasionally receive a "gift" or "project" to take home with them such as a bluebird house kit.  Workdays could be moved indoors if raining.  Some type of craft and story could be provided in place of outdoor work.  Ideal number of volunteers per program: 12 children ages K-5 with a parent.  Min 5/Max 20

All programs are 10:00am to 11:00am and are subject to change.  Contact Michael Hahn, Restoration Ecologist, with any questions at mhahn@lfola.org or (847)707-9878.  Directions and maps can be found at www.lfola.org. Advance registration required.  Please sign up for Open Lands programs by the Thursday prior to an event.

MakeItBetter.net Helps
Raise Money for the Volunteer Center

At the Heart to Heart event at Gorton Community Center on February 5, MakeItBetter.net--a premier online magazine and community resource--will host a subscription drive for its free "Better Letter." The Better Letter is a weekly email newsletter with tips and timely information for the North Shore. In exchange for every email address we collect, MakeItBetter.net will donate $5 to our Volunteer Center. To date, the Better Letter has nearly 12,000 subscribers. As MakeItBetter.net helps the Volunteer Center prosper, we help them with our subscriptions by enhancing their exposure and growing their circulation.

We learned about MakeItBetter.net from Lake Forest resident, Ann Marie Scheidler. Ann Marie, formerly the editorial director for Forest & Bluff magazine, is now their Editor in Chief. MakeItBetter.net was founded in the spring of 2007 by a group of talented and passionate women from the North Shore. It combines the information women want with the tools they need to make their lives, communities, and the world a little better.

We encourage you to visit www.MakeItBetter.net. If you'd like to subscribe online to the Better Letter today, you can elect to donate the $5 contribution to the Volunteer Center from the drop-down menu.

MakeItBetter.net does not share email addresses or other contact information.

The Sarah Mynhier Book Drive

Sarah Mynhier is an alumnus of LFHS who has made literacy her passion.  For the past two years she has led a program to collect and distribute books for children in neighboring communities - distributing more than 4,000 books to Oak Terrace School in Highwood, North School in North Chicago, Women's Residential, A Safe Place and the Big Brothers and Big Sisters organization.  The Volunteer Center has taken over the management of the book drive to continue to promote literacy.

Our book drive this year was an overwhelming success!  We estimate that approximately 4900-5800 books were collected at all 3 District 67 elementary schools, DPM-E, DPM-W, & the Volunteer Center of Lake Forest/Lake Bluff at the Gorton!!!  (Our numbers are based on an average of 50-60 books per box, since it was impossible to count the number of books in a box.)  We ended up with a total of 95 boxes of books that will serve over 2700 students in North Chicago & Waukegan with the priceless gift of reading.  The books are being delivered to the following schools:

*Carman Buckner School in Waukegan (Grades 1-5) - 19 boxes (includes 3 teacher resource boxes) of approx. 1000-1200 books
*Yeager School in North Chicago (Preschool-K) - 3 boxes of approx. 300 books
*A.J. Katzenmaier in North Chicago (K-5) - 16 boxes of approx.
800-1000 books
*South School in North Chicago (K-5) - 16 boxes of approx. 800-1000 books
*Greenbay School in North Chicago (K-5) - 15 boxes of approx. 800-1000 books
*North School in North Chicago (K-5) - 14 boxes of approx. 600-800 books
*Novak King School in North Chicago (6th) - 12 boxes (includes 1 teacher resource box) of approx. 600-800 books

Many, many thanks to all who helped & donated and a special thanks goes to the DPM-E Student Services Club members & parent representatives for helping sort & box all those books!

The Kristen Hughes H.U.G.S. Food Drive

Thanks to the generous donations of students at District 67 and 65 schools, as well as hundreds of community residents, we were able to collect 275 Thanksgiving Dinner bags (each containing a $20 gift certificate) and more than 2,000 canned goods to distribute evenly among 5 food pantries in Lake Bluff, Waukegan and North Chicago.  Happy Thanks Giving!

THANK YOU to the many residents of our community who made 116 holiday wishes come true for the clients of 5 different social service agencies.  Your generosity and compassion is so appreciated!
